Chapter 12

Liam was still smiling as he set the tray on the desk.

I ignored him, walking in and setting the tray on the desk. I poured two cups of tea, adding sugar to mine. I looked at Liam, “How do you take it?”

“Black, please.”

I handed him his tea and then went over to the wall unit, lifted the door, and pulled out a bottle of Bushmill’s. I added some to both of our drinks and set the bottle back on the desk.

I nodded at the plate of sandwiches. “Help yourself to sandwiches too. I’m not sure what kind they are,” I placed one on a small plate for myself.

Liam took one, and we both sat there eating. Mine was tuna. Not my favorite, but I hadn’t realized how hungry I was. I lifted the guestlist I’d given Liam. “May I?”

He nodded. “I’ve only glanced at it. Do you have any idea how many are out of town?” He finished his first sandwich and took another one off the plate.

I took the list and started looking through it. “I printed off the list with everyone’s address and phone numbers, so you’ll be able to tell. There are a few of them staying here. Those who aren’t may be housed with friends or relatives.”

He handed me a pen. “Can you mark who those are?”

“Sure.” I started looking at the list.

Liam’s phone buzzed, and he looked at it, then made a note in his notebook.

“What time was dinner finished?”

I thought about it for a few seconds before answering, “Maybe around half-past eight? Nine at the latest?” I finished the last page and handed the list back to Liam, explaining my system.

“I put checkmarks next to those staying at the house and stars next to my siblings, who are here just for the night. There are six listed from out of town that I’m not sure about. My grandparents, Aunt Agatha and Mr. and Mrs. Webster, are all here. Mum may know where the others are staying.” I sat back in the chair, stretching a little to stay awake.

He looked at his watch and groaned. “Any suggestions on where I can sleep tonight rather than making the drive back to Ballyquicken?”

My head snapped up, and I grinned.

He grinned back at me. “Let me rephrase that. Is there a hotel or pub that offers guest accommodations in town?”

I stopped myself from fanning my heated face, “Not at this time of night. However, you can stay here. We have plenty of room.”

“Are you sure it won’t be a problem?”

“Mum expected a sizeable amount of people, so I’m sure she won’t mind.” I placed my teacup and plate on the tray and said, “Do you have any further questions?”

Just then, Liam’s phone rang. He looked at it and said, “Excuse me.”

“Fitzgerald.”

He listened for a minute. “Thanks, Gary. I’ll be staying here at the Quinn home, so we can go over this all tomorrow when you get here.” He discontinued the call and sat back in his chair.

“So, Detective Fitzgerald, are we done here?” Just then, I yawned, quickly covering my mouth.
